In terms of rules, be they SPA or AMA, they are 
what they are, and we must abide by them.  Why 
are the  lines on the sides of baseball diamonds 
IN BOUNDS, while  lines on the sides of football 
fields and basketball courts OUT of 
BOUNDS?  Because that's the way "they" wrote the rules...

Someone mentioned that SPA is trying to 
re-capture the "style of flying" from those days, 
and that is essentially correct.  The tuned pipe 
and retract restrictions are to keep the cost and 
complexity down...I know, some of you will come 
back and point out that 4-strokes are neither 
inexpensive nor simple, and you are 
correct.  That move was made to keep the 
Knoxville, TN, club, Knox County RC, Inc., 
continuing with SPA due to noise 
restrictions.  Although, as I believe I have said 
here earlier, I had an Enya Gear-Pump .61 turning 
a 3-blade APC prop and using a SoundMaster 
muffler which came in at 89dB @ 9 feet on 
pavement -- and a similarly-equipped YS .61 short 
stroke that did the same.  BTW, those were for 
AMA, not SPA, in the 1989-91 era.

The same is true for SPA -- that's why we are 
trying to accommodate electrics, much to the 
disgust of a couple of our die-hard members, including our esteemed founder.

If any of you would like to fly by our rules (and 
.55s and .61's are competitive these days) we'd 
be delighted to have you join us.  A number of 
our members fly both types, and BPA as well.
