In terms of rules, be they SPA or AMA, they are what they
are, and we must abide by them. Why are the lines on the
sides of baseball diamonds IN BOUNDS, while lines on the sides of
football fields and basketball courts OUT of BOUNDS? Because that's
the way "they" wrote the rules...

Someone mentioned that SPA is trying to re-capture the "style of
flying" from those days, and that is essentially correct. The
tuned pipe and retract restrictions are to keep the cost and complexity
down...I know, some of you will come back and point out that 4-strokes
are neither inexpensive nor simple, and you are correct. That move
was made to keep the Knoxville, TN, club, Knox County RC, Inc.,
continuing with SPA due to noise restrictions. Although, as I
believe I have said here earlier, I had an Enya Gear-Pump .61 turning a
3-blade APC prop and using a SoundMaster muffler which came in at 89dB @
9 feet on pavement -- and a similarly-equipped YS .61 short stroke that
did the same. BTW, those were for AMA, not SPA, in the 1989-91
era.

Well, Guys,

I was preparing a response to Ron Van Putte, but it appears this is not
the venue for that. Everyone is free to choose with whom to
associate, and while we in SPA are sorry to have lost the people who have
chosen not to fly with us, that was/is their choice. If you check
with Jason Shulman, you might find a different perspective.

I won't go into the many discussions I have had with fellow SPAers about
the direction of AMA pattern, as directed by the NSRCA -- but they are
frequent, and those of us having them choose not to fly AMA pattern - but
we don't publicly criticize it, either. I judged several rounds at
an AMA meet last season, and while I really like the turn around part,
the judging reinforced my decision to fly SPA, only.

BTW, if anyone is interested in some 2-meter stuff (engines and
airframes) you can email me privately...it would be great stuff @ a
reasonable price for entry into 2-meter pattern, and up through
Advanced.

reason I quite SPA also… 4-cycles!! There is not much challenge
flying the old pattern with a overpowered (90 4c) engine. That was
what made it hard! The scavenge-pot 60’s didn’t really have enough
power, so you had to FLY the airplane…. If they are allowing 90 4c
engines, why not allow ANY power plant!
Electrics in SPA? Jeez, that's kind of hard to stomach. Next they're
going to allow electronic fuel-injection and anti-lock brakes in Vintage
Sports Car Racing. LOL
I don't understand the 13" prop bit either. On my Axi 4130-20
on 6 cells a 13" prop gives me around 500 watts.
Jerry
Scott, What is the reason behind a 13 inch prop limit for electric?
There
isn't any limit on prop sizes for IC engines is there? A flyer with an
IC
engine searches for the best prop size to the particular plane and
engine
combo, it seems that electric flyers should have the same
flexibility.
