[NSRCA-dist8] Judging Seminar

Right on!

Yes some instruction and discussion helps, but in the long run the way to
learn is sit in the chair and make some mistakes. When I judge no one gives
me any grief when I make a serious judging error and as a contestant I
benefit from the mistakes of others as least as frequently as I'm punished.

Yah flying days are few and far between this spring, Today looks like #4 for
me and unlike you folks still working I'm available every day.

Judging, don't sweat it. Since I've returned to pattern I haven't seen
anyone complain about judging here in the NW. Judging as well as flying
pattern is mostly a learn-by-doing activity. We all miss things and probably
have second thoughts about calls we've made and are always given another
chance.

There is so much detail being written into the rules its kind of
overwhelming especially if we aren't intimately familiar with the schedule
being judged. Pattern is about accurate geometry, symmetry within maneuvers
and placement. Deviations of lines, angles, radiuses and rolling elements
are more easily judged than pitch brakes, tail wags or what ever currently
distinguishes a snap roll from a fast aileron roll. To quote hearsay from
one of out noted D-8 pilots, "If it looks like a snap roll it's a snap
roll", and it can happen faster than it takes to read the quote.

I guess I should quit before I air my true feelings about nit-pickers and
retire to the shop for a couple hours of therapy before heading to the field
to meet Wayne.

I only have a DVD of the video. I'm working on getting it converted to a AVI
file.

In regards to the Boise contest judging etc. I'm all for going with the flow
and all, we can do whatever everybody wishes. I just wanted to mention its
very early in a season in which the AMA schedules have changed and many of
us have not had a whole lot of practice. I think many of us would benefit if
the judging lectures included some discussion on how to prevent downgrades.
Or, how to fly the maneuvers the correct way.

Depending on the attendance at the Boise contest we could use this as a
teaching contest. For example if Rex and I are the only FAI pilots I am sure
Rex would be ok letting judges practice on us and then we could provide
feedback after the flights. We could review the new sequences before each
class starts as well. I think we should all be prepared for this approach
and download and read the competition manual and the sequences on the NSRCA
web site. Also download the test for both AMA and FAI.

We could also use the Saturday night get together to view the video and take
the test together as well as Q&A rules updates etc.

Mike, did you make a digital copy of the video we can play on a computer?

I like the idea of doing this during the Boise meet. Hopefully we will
have the correct data to review prior to going to the meet (I just checked
NSRCA and they still have the old sequences posted). I may fly sportsman
at Boise as well; depends on how much practice I get in prior to Boise
(although that has never stopped me from making a fool of myself before).
Mike, don't worry about "real" judges and "real" points for me in Sportsman
(if I do fly it); I just want to get some competitive flying in. I plan on
going to Spokane and practice on Thursday with Scott and then we will head
to Boise early Friday and maybe get a few flights in on Friday afternoon.
It all hinges on the weather.

I will not be participating in the 21 May seminar. As much as I would like
to learn from Gary, there is no way I can make that trip in between the two
May meets.

All,

Thanks for the input. I know this is not an ideal time and its stuck between
two contest weekends and that does make it hard to attend. At this point I
am trying to gain input from you all as to who would attend to see if its
worth holding the session. Gary is willing and has worked with Ray to secure
a location (thanks guys!) so we can pull this off but it does not sound like
those of you who have responded would attend, let me know if I am wrong. I
will reach out to some of the other pilots via email and see if we can get
enough attendance to justify the effort.

The option that Mike discussed below does make sense. The material you need
to study is on the NSRCA web site and if people did the prep work we could
have an open discussion at the Boise contest. The thing I like about the
sessions is the open discussions and group interaction, this is missing in
the online model. I am not sure how big a block of time we could get on
Saturday night or where to hold the discussion? any ideas?

Lets hear your thoughts on this idea...

"Mr. Everything Riggs" my wife use to say that about me! But that's a
another story.

Travelling for a non-contest event really stinks no matter how you do it.
With that said, my suggestion would be for all us new people to study and be
ready to take the test in Boise. Then we could ask current judges questions
and be ready to at least judge sportsman.

If the weather is nice the Saturday of the Boise contest, I fully expect to
have upwards of 10 entries in Sportsman. If nobody from outside the club
enters, I will just have club members judge, but I really don't want to
screw up somebody who has traveled to our contest. I also expect as the
rounds progress sportsman participation will drop off. Again, if its only
club members I'll let them decide when to call it a contest. Last August we
flew three rounds and called it a day. Another idea is to run two classes of
sportsman, fun seekers and points seekers. Using real judges for the points
seekers and club member judges for the fun seekers. FYI Tim: If the weather
doesn't improve for practicing I'm going to be flying Sportsman.

Seriously how many hours do Judging Seminars take? Having never been to one
I'd like to know.
