[NSRCA-discussion] FW: FW: ESVs for flight pack lipos?

I leave them plugged in for the entire winter December - April. In the spring, it takes about 45 mils to refill.

Yeah I didn't want to sound like an ad but I guess if you look at it as a "safety" issue it's OK to point out the differences in some of the regulators we use in our airplanes. The Tech Aero regulators can be left connected directly to the battery 9no in-line switch required) for a reasonable amount of time (at least a few weeks) without any harm to the battery because they draw almost NO current when they're "off". Not all regulators are like this.
That being said, if you're going to lay up your airplane for an extended period of time it's important to disconnect the battery no matter what brand of regulator you're using. LiPOs aren't too happy about being discharged to 0V!

John's ethics wouldn't let him send this to the list--but this is the kind of stuff that is helpful--probably would have saved a 40.00 battery--and maybe my house--since the reg was plugged up
while Pam and I participated in a seminar for a few days. One of those deals where I sort of pushed to get it in the air b/4 leaving town, flew it the nite b/4, put it up--and didn't think about it until I got back with time to run out to the field. Battery had puffed and was 'loose'--I had no clue as to why--except I convinced myself I MUST have left it on--or hit the switch when I put it up. Uh, no...

                Rich,
I didn't want to post this to the list because I don't want to sound like I'm promoting my own company publicly but...

You can leave a Tech Aero regulator connected directly to the battery for a LONG time before the battery discharges to an unsafe level. Ed and I designed them with a very low quiescent current draw just for that reason. We also have a fail-safe switch arrangement on our regulators. If the switch fails, the regulator (and your airplane) stays ON. If you put a mechanical switch in-line between the battery and the regulator, you could experience loss of power if the switch fails (and they do).

Here's a link to our site in case you're interested:

Let me know if you have any questions.

BTW - I use the Radio South meter too. It's not complicated to build one of these yourself but why bother? The Radio south meter is reasonable and it works every time.

Bought the set-up from Brian(Tanic). After I took my completely shot 1500s back to him after they wouldn't hold a charge--he asked " You DID separate the regulator from the battery--didn't you--like I told you?!!!" "No", I said sheepishly.... The regs evidently draw a tiny amount when hooked up.
I'm going to call Tony--that's exactly what I was looking for!

                  Thanks,

                  Richard
