[NSRCA-discussion] Small Car - 2 m plane hauling

I have a Matrix, and it does indeed hold a full 2M with plug-in wings. Front passenger seat folds down flat (forward) and has a handy little plastic tray on the back to catch the oil drips :) Back seats also fold down flat individually, and the cargo area and back of the seats are plastic as well. Another nice little feature is the set of moveable tie-downs in tracks running back to front in the cargo area, to secure an airplane stand. You can also put the plane in with a passenger, but you have to watch the prop between the front seats when you shoulder check!

Is anyone looking at the Toyota Matrix as a potential candidate? Seems
that it should have enough room for one 2 meter model (plug in wings
only), if the front seat lays down flat. I wanted to look at this as an
alternative to the grand caravan I'm driving now, assuming the mileage
was 50% better.

The PT Cruiser definitely will hold a full 2 meter. My friend in FLA
used one for several years. With the 4-banger, he was getting around 30
mpg.

I had a Ford Windstar with the 3.8 and as Tim mentioned, it blew its
gasket at around 75K. Very distasteful experience.

So if I get another one, I might achieve a 20% success rate?  Thanks
anyhow!

Ed, I work on these things everyday, if you buy a mit don't say I
didn't warn you. :)

Dave, take a pencil eraser and clean the contacts on the doors, btw has
it blown the head gaskets yet? If not it most likely doesn't have the
3.8 engine.

By far the Scaryvans give far less trouble20than any other minivan in
the same class. Look at it this way, a mommymobile isn't anything
different than a pickup with a camper shell.

I use a Ford Windstar to carry mine and as much as I thought I would
dislike a minivan I got to say I like it a lot. I’ve had some
electrical issues too but limited to interior lights, door locks, and
power windows. I think it’s related to the sensors that tell the
computer when all the doors are closed. Mines a 1999 model so all that
electrical stuff is getting kinda aged now. But with 150K it still runs
great, burns no oil and gets 22-26 mpg depending on how heavy the foot
is. I’ll get another one when it dies. Carries 2 planes, gear, luggage
for my wife & I, tent, cooler, and lounge chairs to contest easily.

All valid points.  The on
e thing I can't stand about the Dodge stuff
though, and I'm on my 4th and last one now, is that they basically
can't get the electrical gremlins out of the car.  Every one of mine
has acted as if it is haunted in some way.  I can explain each of the
unique behaviors that my 4 Caravan's have had, but it just shouldn't be
so.  It's more stuff than is worth going into here, but don't say I
didn't warn you.  You get what you pay for.  Next time, I'm looking at
a Mitsubishi.

Another vote for the Caravan. I can honestly say that I love mine too.
The mileage figures everyone is claiming are right on. On my trip to
the NATs this year I saw 24 - 26 with the A/C on (and I wasn't exactly
driving at the speed limit). Around town you get about 18. PLENTY of
room. I have Stow-N-Go on mine so I can fold the seats right into the
floor. When you do this you can get full 8' sheets of plywood inside
the van with the hatch closed.

Add a hitch and you can tow an 18' big block Olds powered Jet boat. Try
that with a Prius!

As for the "soccer mom" image - just ride your Harley to work a few
days a week to make up for it! LOL

Jim,

I have the Grand Caravan.  Two 2 meter planes are not a problem
even with a tent, chair and extra tool boxes.  I never thought that I
would drive a mini van, but it is actually a pretty nice vehicle to
drive all the time.  However,  the kids I work with call it the " loser
cruiser".  It's not real sexy,  but you get to haul stuff from Home
Depot too.  Highway mileage is 26 with the A/C on.  It's a better value
than the Town and Country(but not as nice).

Hi Guys,

I commute about 75 miles a day, then do about 100 miles of driving a
weekend for practice so I am on the road a lot.  I am thinking to down
sizing one of my cars.  At this point, I’m thinking about these three:

Scion XB, 28, hwy mileage

Honda Fit, 34, hwy mileage

Chevy HHR, 30 , hwy mileage

$ these around $16,000

Here is a nice website that allows you to do car by car comparisons.

OR – is something like the Dodge Grand Caravan the way do go, and
that is the biggest bang for the buck?

Any ideas would be great.

Thanks,

Jim
