[NSRCA-discussion] Was "contest" Small Contest Idea

I have taken my responses to others "off line" but since my name has been
specifically brought up in this note, I will again respond to the group.
I thought this dead horse had been beaten enough!

I AM NOT UPSET!!!! I am just using this example of how a CD can get in
trouble by NOT following the published information. Why does someone have
to be upset to point out a percieved problem?

For me, this was a unique situation. I had a birthday party for my 3 yr
old grandson to attend in Greenwich, CT on Saturday. With the contest in
Hadley, MA I had given some thought to attending it Sunday, but had
decided against it several days earlier, so I was NOT directly affected
by it at all.

I have never gone to the second day of a 2 day contest, and would not
plan to, but I HAVE attended a few that HAVE had this happen. a couple
years ago I was at one that had a new pilot come in on Sunday and he was
denied entrance to the contest, and not permitted to fly!!! That too is
wrong!!!

Maybe I am just old fashion. I like to see everyone follow the rules. And
just for the record...this is the 3rd time I have written this...If I had
been one of the pilots there Saturday, I probably WOULD have voted the
way everyone else did...but only after making the CD aware of the
potential problem with the decision.

The reasons for changing are all good reasons, tying up the club field,
lack of income, needed manpower, etc, but it still violates the rule of
Doing what has been published. Think about the new comer who may not be
able to make it Sat but can make Sunday...He certainly does not have the
forsite to call the CD to see if he has changed the 2 day event to a 1
day. Why would he even think that might happen? He would have very good
grounds for a formal complaint. That is the ONLY point I am attempting to
get everyone to understand!!! We are trying to get new blood into the
sport and this could be very damaging. As it stands, noone was hurt. I
don't think anyone is mad or upset, except a few who are livid with me
for even bringing it up.

Maybe everyone would rather just keep their head in the sand and pretend
that this could never be a problem!

On one thread a comparison was made to scheduling a "2 day" event, but it
was really a 1 day with the Sunday reserved as a rain date. That is
certainly NOT the same thing as a SCHEDULED 2 day contest!

Ken: If you want to aim the arrow, take it off line and I'll be glad to
converse with you directly!

Not disputing that fact, rules are rules. The "arrow" was meant for
Terry who seemed extremely upset that a contest layout was changed
without his knowledge, and that he "may" have traveled to that contest on
the second day, which we all know wasn't held. I understand that all of
the rules are meant to be followed, I wouldn't have it any other way, but
in certain cases "maybe" a allowance of flexibility needs to be
entertained. I don't believe the rules allow this, at the moment,
however, it's certainly worth discussing in the future.

For the record, I don't mean to call Terry out on this subject, I
understand his concerns, however, the rules may be a little vague on this
subject, I'm going to check before the feedback hits.

And just so you know, Del, if I had an issue with your take on this
subject, I'd let you know, I'm not one to hold much in.;-)

Hi Ken

Don't know "who" your arrow is meant for Ken, but rules are rules for ALL
to follow... all the time... I am just making others that maybe aren't
aware or others may even think it is ok to break the rules. If we stop
following the rules, or only pick and choose which rules on a given day
we decide to follow how is that help the growth of pattern. People that
are new or 1st time entering may have read the rules come to expect that
the organization does follow the rules. I for one, hate to see some,
start to condone that the rules are their to use when they see fit.

Mark,

I remember Arch telling me about that contest, and it sounded like you
guys all had a great time. I just can't imagine anyone complaining that
"you didn't follow the advertised agenda, so I'm calling the AMA".

Not speaking of anyone in particular...ok, maybe I am...

Reading this thread reminded me of a contest that Arch Stafford had a few
years back where we had a total of 9 or 10 people show up 3 of which were
local sportsman pilots. We had a full spread too, with 1 or 2 in each
class. It didn’t make much sense to hold a traditional contest but we
were all there to have some pattern “fun”. Soooooo... We made it a 2
class contest. The sportsman pilots each flew 2 rounds at a time (One
takeoff and landing), with lots of feedback (the entire group judged each
flight) and they had a very competitive well judged event.

The rest of us ALL flew the advanced pattern, with Handicaps. FAI got
–1pt per maneuver, Masters –1/2pt, Advanced flew it straight up, and
Intermediate pilots got +1pts.

It was not only a lot of fun (Everyone but the advanced guys were flying
an unknown for the most part) but it also was a VERY tight contest. I
don’t recall who won...didn’t really matter.

No..it didn’t follow the advertised sanctioned contest, but it was great
fun, competitive, a very good learning/practicing event, and it made the
best from the turnout we had.
