When did you buy your 14MZ? After a short time, Futaba clipped all of the receiver antennas before shipping a new radio out... I checked on when I got a new receiver... It was in August 2005. It had the shorter antenna. I previously stated that I got it in june 2006, but that was incorrect.
I originally purchased the 14MZ radio in June 2005. At that time all were being shipped with the long receiver antenna. During the time when I was having the lockout problems, the problem with lockout was just starting to be discussed on the 14MZ club website... I was unaware of this.
I figured that I had a bum receiver and ordered a new one from Radio South, planning on sending the new receiver in at a later date to get repaired/replaced... After I got the new receiver, I noticed the attenna length and got on the website to see what was happening.... By then, they had a discussion on clipping the antenna... I clipped my original receiver antenna and put it in an old plane to try it out... It worked perfectly.
I've been using that receiver ever since with no issues whatsoever.
You are right about the backlight using up so much power during programming... 50 minutes seems to be about right.
There is a definate difference between using 1024 and 2048. The response time is noticeably quicker.
I ordered my radio with stiff springs... Not sure exactly what spring it is, but seems plenty stiff... Tony put them in before shipping it to me.

I've used the R5014DPS receiver in 3 different planes now with no problems.
I did not measure the length of the antennae wire prior to installation.
Both my rx'es have the same length antennae, maybe later tonight I can
remove 1 and measure it's length. You will notice a difference, at least in
a well setup pattern plane going from 1024 to 2048 resolution. I also
noticed the 40% better update rate Futaba claims over the 9Z radios. Other
than the too soft factory stick springs and still too soft factory Futaba
"stiff" springs for the 14mz, I'm very happy with it. I ended up installing
stick springs from a 9Z radio to get the feel I was looking for. I do not
have the part number as I ordered them from Futaba some time ago but I do
remember they were replacement springs for the 9Z. I also purchased a
genuine Sony NP-F570 battery and have used it for both programming and
flying and can record no difference in charge times, Tx on times, etc. The
14mz is a battery hog in programming mode with the backlight on for the
screen, mine will take the battery from 100% to 30% in about 50 minutes if
  solely programming.
