Paul,
Here are a couple of suggestions from professionally servicing engines:
1. I have an old jug of 5% junk fuel.  Fuel is made of a solvent compatible 
with the goo on your engine.  In fact it dissolves the goo on your engine. 
Soak it good.
2. (this I got from a tip on this list from Earl Haury and it's worth its 
weight in gold) Go get some Dawn Power Dissolver.  The stuff is incredible 
and removing varnish and goo.  But wear plastic gloves, it needs to be 
worked in and it eats skin.
3. gentle warming is good, and I would consider it my #3 option, but after 
the first 2 I never need #3 anymore.
