[NSRCA-discussion] rookie judge

I have a compromise for those who want TO's scored and those who don't.
Take off and landing are vital parts of the flight. Landing probably the
most important, especially if you plan on flying the next round. I've
always thought TO's and landings should be scored. I've seen more than one
round decided by one guy nailing a landing and the other person who had a
similar flight screwing up the landing. I think on the last NSRCA rules
survey, most of the people who voted agreed. I see the arguments for both
sides. I will agree that last year by not scoring them, it did seem to
speed up contests. However that being said, as Larry said, that is
something that would separate pattern from other types of precision
aerobatics..if you don't believe me, go watch an IMAC contest. However,
what if we kept them as 0 and 10, but made the criteria much more difficult
for the 10. Take off has to break ground in a certain box much closer to
center and shrink the landing box. Make it a little bit more a challenge.
This way, simply getting airborne and then getting back on the ground are
not enough. I know there is a landing area, however I've flown off fields
that weren't much larger than the landing area.
Just my .02 worth.

I agree with Alan.
A smooth TO and a great landing set pattern apart from all others.as long as
your not using me as an example .There is always room for improvement.vbg.
I also agree with the scored TO/L for Sportsman, Intermediate, and Advanced.
10's & 0's for Masters. By the time you hit Masters, the landings are almost
a given 10 anyway. Well unless you add a 20mph crosswind, then they all
start looking pretty ugly from there.

I think they should be scored. The fact that I have always been scored on
them has made me strive to do them better than before.
There are a few maneuvers in some sequences that should only be scored 0 or
10.......You get a 10 just to have the balls to try it :-)

Speaking of scoring takeoffs and landings. . . . . does anyone have an
opinion either way??

It works for me every time I judge. . . .
Yeah, but those pesky takeoff and landing scores give you away every time.

This will be my first time at the Nats so please advise. I understand that I
am to help judge but my issue with it is I don't think I would be a good
judge. I can do sportsman but it just would not be fair to the advanced guys
please advise ( i will if its a must but i would be a much better scribe)

Let me expand on what Arch wrote. The AMA property has three flying
sites that we use for competition. We use two sites for the Master
and F3A classes. One site is used for Intermediate and Advanced. As
a result of requiring each class of pilots to judge the next 'lower'
class, Advanced can't fly at the same time as Intermediate. The same
is true for Master and F3A. Master pilots judge Advanced and F3A, so
they must fly in different sessions. So, one session (either morning
or afternoon on alternating years) will have Intermediate and Master
pilots competing. The other session will have Advanced and F3A
competing. I hope this helps.
