[NSRCA-discussion] Hacker gearbox( and other...)

I was visiting Dean P this past weekend and he showed me an American made geared motor he will be testing on his 11 pound test bed soon. The gear box is indeed sealed and oil filled. Very smooth and much quieter than the Hacker big geared set-ups. Time will tell if this approach is trouble free and maintenance prolonged. Certainly seemed beefy enough. Prop is a 21 x 14 I think, but not sure. As far as what oil, I don't know. I would use Mobil 1

That would be ideal-but that's not what we have-which lead to the discussion
of sealed bearings.  An issue that hasn't been mentioned is the dead spot
with the motor that allows it to oscillate on start-up occasionally-makes a
hell of a racket-and I think it is VERY tough on the gears and bearings.
That was with the standard settings available.  If you get the Hacker/Master
programming box, it gives quite a few more options-like a softer start and
expo throttle--+/- 1 degree advance, etc.(and it seems some controllers
ignore what your transmitter throttle curve looks like).  It's 50 bucks,
easy to use, and worth it.  It's a lot nicer(smoother) start and throttle
response IMHO.

I am not into the big electric stuff but I just had one of those fleeting
thoughts.
If the gear case is sealed so the fluids or grease wont come out then the
heavy oil that is recommend should work just fine.   AS long as there is
enough in the case for the planetarys to be immersed in.  Much like the
gears in the rear end of a car.
Could you not drill a small hole and tapped for a small screw in the bottom
of the gear case to drain the oil and one on top to fill?  You could flush
the system with clean oil and refill.  Would solve the problem of having to
dissasemble every time.
