FAI Weight Limit

It's quite interesting that FAI doesn't treat all classes equally. Here's an
example:

6.3.   Class F4C - RADIO CONTROLLED FLYING SCALE MODEL AIRCRAFT

6.3.1. General Characteristics

Maximum weight of the complete model aircraft without fuel in flying
condition including any dummy pilot:  15 kg
Model aircraft using electric motors as a power source shall be weighed
WITHOUT batteries used for those motors.

I find it VERY unlikely that the FAI rule body would change the weight
limit.  Keep in mind that this is not just pattern...FAI uses the 5kg
weight limit universally throughout...it's basically their definition of
a model.  Raising it across the board would be a HUGE move, with little
motivation. Raising it just for precision Aerobatics seems...well...out
of character.

All this discussion about FAI raising the weight limit is entertaining,
but we (the U.S.A.) has very little to say about it.  The U.S.A. has
one vote and one can safely say that whatever happens, it will probably
be what the Europeans want, because they have the votes.  If we don't
like the way an FAI vote went, we could wring our hands over it, but
all we'd get would be sore hands.

Whether we follow suit in the case of any action by the FAI is another
matter.  A change in FAI rules would only affect a very small
percentage of Pattern pilots, those who have a realistic chance of
attending an F3A World Championships.

In fact, we don't even have to follow FAI rules for F3A competitions in
this country.  We can just put in an AMA rule which says that a
particular FAI rule will not be followed in F3A competitions in the
U.S.A.
