FAI Weight Limit

There are some good arguments made for moving away from current powerplants.
A weight increase might stimulate more interest on a global scale. Both
gasoline and electricity are much more widely available than alcohol based
fuel. A weight increase does not necessarily mean a size increase. Strict
adherence to the FAI rules should require we weigh airplanes WITH FUEL NOW.

It is unlikely the contest board would allow consideration of this from the
ranks anyway. It will likely fall as usual to the CD's to make the decision
on a local basis.

As a CD I will elect to allow whichever set of rules as long as it is AMA
legal.
I have been pondering a local proposal that allows a handicap for the 90
powered aircraft anyway.

I find it VERY unlikely that the FAI rule body would change the weight
limit. Keep in mind that this is not just pattern...FAI uses the 5kg
weight limit universally throughout...it's basically their definition of
a model. Raising it across the board would be a HUGE move, with little
motivation. Raising it just for precision Aerobatics seems...well...out
of character.

All this discussion about FAI raising the weight limit is entertaining,
but we (the U.S.A.) has very little to say about it. The U.S.A. has
one vote and one can safely say that whatever happens, it will probably
be what the Europeans want, because they have the votes. If we don't
like the way an FAI vote went, we could wring our hands over it, but
all we'd get would be sore hands.

Whether we follow suit in the case of any action by the FAI is another
matter. A change in FAI rules would only affect a very small
percentage of Pattern pilots, those who have a realistic chance of
attending an F3A World Championships.

In fact, we don't even have to follow FAI rules for F3A competitions in
this country. We can just put in an AMA rule which says that a
particular FAI rule will not be followed in F3A competitions in the
U.S.A.
