[NSRCA-discussion] Need info Hydout header & pipe for Webra 145

Over the past couple years, I've pretty much run all the tuned pipes and mufflers from Aeroslave, Asano, Bolly, ES, Grieve, MAC, and OS/Hatori. All have strengths and weaknesses, and which one to use depends a lot on your priorities for power, linearity, weight, volume of noise, "quality" of the noise, and price. If I needed to buy a pipe today, I'd buy the Aeroslave. For the Webra 160, assuming a 2.25" rise header, I'd set the pipe length at 24.75" from glowplug to the main baffle in the pipe (not the little flow straightener wedge just in front of the main baffle) measuring in a straight line. Prop for about 8,000 RPM - 16.5x12 or 13, 17x12 or 13, 18x10 or 11.

  Paul,

Not sure what other pipes are good for the Webra, I was kind of hoping someone else would jump in with pipe options. I'm building an Impact and powering it with a Webra 1.60, I would like to find a pipe a little less expensive than the ES. The ES stuff is very good, I have used a couple of there pipes.
As far as the rise calculation goes, I think its the centerline of the exhaust port to the centerline of the pipe.
I have always used a pipe port diameter that matched the diameter of the header.

What other pipes are good - that one is a bit pricey. Also how do I go about calculating the header rise ?
I suppose it would require first picking the pipe and then the pipe center would be 1/2 the diameter (yes I know that is called the radius) plus the standoff distance from the fuse. The vertical distance between the pipe center and the center of the exhaust would yield the rise.
Is there a generally useable estimate for pipe diameter that can be used w/o first selecting the pipe ?
  Thanks,
  Paul

    Paul,

I have a Hydeout with a Webra 1.45 that I flew all last season. The 1.45 has lots of power and I have been very happy with its performance. I have a grieves pipe and a header I bought from Piedmont Models I think its the same as the one Central Hobbies sells. I bought the header with a large rise, about 2 1/2" and then I cut a section out of the header to set the rise at the value I needed. I connected the header together with silicon tubing. The whole setup has given me very good service.
I heard you can't get the grieves pipe any more so you might try the ESD2c160L9 from Central, kind of spendy at $230.
I did have a lot of trouble with the Webra when I was first setting things up and what worked for me was installing a bladder, bubbleless, tank that I bought from Central.
I can send you some pictures of my setup if you like.

A friend has purchased a used Hydeout and decided to install a Webra 145. Any suggestions on header and pipe to use ? How much rise should there be on the header.
    TIA
