YS DZ Fuel Hunger...

Mark,

I can get 11-12 sometimes in calm even 13-14 mins out a 140DZ on a 20oz
tank.

My guess if this...Too rich for starters....lean it down a bit and see if
its barking. Just go couple clicks at a time. Next thing is throttle
control. If you go to Full power much it will eat much much fuel...I'm
running both the 140's and the 160. The 160 seems to be a little more hungry
at times...Windy conditions..

How does your cowl area look...It its just soaking with oil then you have a
leak. Look to the head gasket, the o-rings on the intake tube. Since the DZ
only has "air" in the intake tube it can leak and you will not know
it...Then you will need a richer needle setting to accommodate the extra
air....If its leaking then you have what I tend to call the externally
lubricated version. I have one of these it is a sloppy pig. I could not
figure out where the excess oil-fuel was coming from...Then I took it apart
and added a 2nd head gasket....The motor is as dry as the other
externally....It was a fuel hog too. But now is as good as the others.

>From the number you give of 8400 on a 17-12 std on 30% Heli/DZ fuel I know
which brand you are using....This number is high. In fact fairly new 140's
turn that prop about 8000-8100. You might have a real stump puller. I have
one of those, and it eats more fuel....Look to trying the carb insert it
will get you a few more minutes. Plus it helps manage the afterburner mode.

The last question is are you flying 24oz dry or is it barking at 9mins
landing with 3-4-5oz in the tank. If this is the case then your fuel tank
setup is not the best. Perhaps the line is short on the pickup(clunk in the
very very back), or put some foam around the tank to reduce foaming in the
tank. If you are using the foam clunk...look at the aluminum body and orient
the holes horizontal in the tank rather than vertical. This may help....Also
what tank? the Dubro and Sullivan tanks are pretty wide footprint. They get
a lower depth of fuel quicker. The tettra tanks are more compact and
sq-like...they will hold the depth level higher in the tank. Works better.

Let me know if you find something....

Subject: YS DZ Fuel Hunger...

Ok all you DZ experts...I need some advice. My DZ is running
awesome....spinning a 17x12 at 8400 rpm. Never quits, seems to idle
..fair.

Sooo...here's the problem. It's slurping down 24oz of fuel in 9 minutes.
Now I know they're hungry...but they shouldn't be THAT hungry. It's clearly
running rich (that's pronounced "Smoke Trail") and if given time will load
up slightly on the low end. The main needle is 1 3/8 out and I'm nervous
to dial it in much farther.

Am I just being silly...crank it in...or is there something else I should be
doing???

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

-Mark
