Ron,
It all depends on the source resistance of the nicds (which is low, and 
that's why we use them).  A 1.2v difference between packs through a short 
will draing current.   Circuit board traces vary in their capacity, but 10 
amps is a reasonable burnout level.  3-4 amp spikes are routine when doing 
snaps and multi-servo moves (like wind correction).  Add on top of that 
two packs balancing each other at 3-4 amps and you has a situation you 
don't want inside your receiver.
