A quick way to check your tach is to hold it in front of a fluorescent light bulb. With the tach set on two-blade it should read 3600 rpm....i.e. our household power is 60 cycles/sec. I know that this doesn't check it in the range that we are running but it is a cheap simple check to see if you are bad off in calibration.
