The 3/32" steel rods with 4/40 ends from the hobby shop, are fairly soft
steel; this is necessary so that the threads may be rolled. Not sure if this
type of steel can be tempered enough for our purposes.
A better solution may be using 3/32" music wire. Far stiffer and stronger,
and the bent coil will seldom require rebending. That's what I use most of
the time, but in a pinch, I have used the other material above, and just
rebend as necessary
The soft steel allows rebending many times while the music wire is pretty
unforgiving. Take your pick
