Building question

I know some of you cut patterns out of the wing cores to save weight. I didn't want to do that because I wasn't sure how things were going to fit after turning a straight trailing edge wing into a double taper and putting extra large control surfaces on. Now that I'm sheeted and capped, can I go ahead and rout out a pattern to save weight? Or will it weaken things too much.Anybody ever try this?
