Hello all,

Hope you are all well and healthy.

Thanks Art for all your work and time coordinating all of this.  I support more contests and understand the work that goes into them.  You need the local club support, I personally know how hard it is without more than "you can use the field for the weekend."  There is also the issue of the scoring system, not very many people know how to set it up and use it.  I was starting to learn, but have forgot a lot since being away for over a year.  More contests puts more work for those limited members who have been tasked with transporting, setting up, running, trouble shooting and breaking down the system.  I am all for the championship series and points, but that is not why I participate.  I would sure like the championship contest to move around and not be in Medford every year, it is double points, not fair to us "easterners".  Yes, travel is a significant issue for us here in D8, I thought we had a nice balance in the past years with the number of contests.  In regards to a contest in Boise, I am now on the board of the club here and can discuss it with them.  We will need to discuss specifically the responsibilities of the club and those of the CD.

Very much looking forward to an enjoyable season of flying, competing, socializing, joking and hanging out with you guys over food and drinks in 2021!!

Bob, my desire to have more contests within the district is to boost participation by reducing the travel requirements. IMO adding contests but requiring 5/8 participation to win a championship defeats that purpose. You say that the championship is the incentive but I am questioning how many people are going to be able to afford 5 contests next year. Incentive gone for those guys.I'm basing this on my IMAC days. Within the district we averaged the same 8 contests but based the championship on the best 3 contests plus the championship contest. Does NSRCA require a certain number or is each district able to set their own numbers? Point is that if we want to increase participation we may need to get a bit creative here. As someone relitivly new to pattern and new to District 8 I see those who have been involved for a long period of time but very few " newbies ".

I’m reading, “ let’s have more contests” and at the same time “let’s have one district champs”. I guarantee you can’t both. If you want more contests you have to provide some incentive to attend. If we weren't just coming off the Covid pandemic ( hopefully ) I would have no issue with the best 5 out of 8. I will also agree with Igor about the championship contest, I feel that the last contest of the season needs to have weather considerations. Ending the season on a contest that wasn't hampered by foul weather keeps us looking forward the the next season.

known to be traditionally nice weather days.

However, Redmond field has certain routines
to prevent their tents from flying away in those

September 18th of 2020 in Redmond recorded
wind gusts only 25 mph, but if I can order the
weather for the D8 championship, may I ask

Moving on to 2021… We’ve called to the judges “next maneuver is landing” for the last time and 2020 is quickly becoming a vague image in the rear view mirror. As a statement of Aresti maneuvers we might describe the year as having too many Unknowns. It is time to focus on 2021 with more Knowns.

As you all know John Bentley will be stepping into the D-8 DVP shoes for the 2021. John, Sean Mersh and I have had a number of discussions about steps we could take to make next year’s contests more accessible while reducing the amount of travel required over the course of the summer. In preparing a tentative schedule we agreed that the District Championship should be more centrally located to accommodate our pilots. We hope to schedule contests so that there will be at least a two week interval between events. We propose offering new locations for contests and slightly increasing the number of contests. Within this framework we propose that in selecting District Champions the scoring will be based on the five best scores achieved over the season. Hopefully this will permit pilots to set their contest itineraries for more convenient travel. Of course, this does restrict pilots from going to all events if they choose.

In reviewing the attached schedule I’d like to draw your attention to several elements:

  *   The Medford contest is set as the first contest of the season. It is intended that the contest will continue the D-7/D-8 shootout we’ve enjoyed for many years.
  *   The AMA club in Eugene is an attractive site for a new event. Rick Bergeron is facilitating discussions with the club president and we hope to be able to confirm this soon.
  *   The proposed date for the Eugene contest falls on Mother’s Day weekend. This may not be attractive for some pilots so, we suggest as an alternative the weekend of May 1-2. The downside to this alternative is the one week spacing between Medford and Eugene.
  *   As you all know D-8 reaches to the east and we would like to see more pattern pilots joining us from these areas. We propose reintroducing the Boise contest. With promotion we should be able to draw participation from both Idaho and Utah. John Bentley has offered to be CD of Boise.
  *   The District Championship is always the last contest of the season. In 2021 we propose the event be held in Redmond.

None of this is in “cement”. The next step is for all D-8 pilots to review and chime in. We all know that scheduling these events is a jigsaw puzzle, especially integrating with individual clubs. So we need to finalize soon. If you have thoughts please respond by November 18.
