[NSRCA-dist8] Plunging in

2020 is up and running and after six days I haven't yet broken a prop.
(Also, I haven't yet been flying this year.) This is my first attempt at
using the NSRCA mail server for reaching everyone in D-8.

I'm looking forward to serving in this capacity of DVP for our district.
Many of you have held this position and I'm sure we are all grateful to you
for your having climbed into the chair for a few years. I will undoubtedly
be calling on you as this year's "opportunities" come along.

First thing up is the 2020 calendar. I've attached a doc providing those
dates as well the possibility of an additional contest. Location hasn't
been pinned down. I would appreciate feedback from all on whether to pursue
another event. Nathan will be posting this to the D-8 page in a few days.

This Judging Seminar (JS) is scheduled in March. We are off to a new set of
sequences and Gary McClellan will be escorting us through an intense review
of these old/new maneuvers. If you haven't yet found them, Jim Hiller has
posted his, as always, impeccable PowerPoint displays of each sequence to
the site. Take a look before the seminar.

Over the years I've observed that the JS is our only opportunity to have a
"business meeting" surrounding major topics on our collective horizons. I
hope to use Saturday morning of the JS to get input on topics of
importance. It will be useful if we can get some dialog going on these *and*
other topics before the seminar to use our time efficiently. Here are some
items:
1. Scoring system - We have relied on Pat Harris far too long for managing
the scoring system. We all, and especially CDs, need to be familiar with
its operation. I think CDs should take it on as a part of their duties for
their contests. Pat will take us through a tutorial.
2. Patten in the shadow of the FAA. How should CDs prepare?
3. Additional contest - This topic seems to arise every several years. In
my tenure I have seen seasons of as many as 9 (10?) contests. There is no
magic number. It boils down to how much time and travel is everyone
prepared to invest in providing a fulfilling contest season.
4. How can we be effective in encouraging local pilots to give pattern a
try?
5. Big topic but I'm interested in some worthy thinking on the possibility
of hosting a Nats on the West Coast.

Heavy lifting and we won't get to details at the JS but it will be useful
to all of us to get a feeling for the appetite on these subjects. If you
have others to add to the hopper, please let me know.

Prepare for take off,

Art
