[NSRCA-discussion] Model Identification for FAI starting in 2022

We are not that independent of the FAI as much as what you may perceive. I am an AMA competition board member. When we vote on proposed rules changes we do take into consideration what the FAI does. The majority of our rules and regulations are very much in line with FAI. At one time they were not. We do try to make changes that make sense that will enhance and improve competition participation on the regional and national level. Unfortunately, our niche in the hobby has become more and more a sport for those who can throw money at it. FAI, in my personal opinion, is one of the major driving forces to this situation we find ourselves in. The level of complexity we have reached has greatly decreased participation in our sport along with other distractions in our lives. It is basically a $7-10K proposition to have a full blown primary and a backup airframe. Well you say build your own airframe to reduce cost? Not everyone has the time or building skills required.

Interesting that the US chose to be independent of the FAI.
That has me pondering why that is……
I guess it may not be a simple answer, yet probably no different as to why for example, there are so many different “standard’ systems in the world.
The AMA must obviously feel there is an advantage for its members by remaining independent. Could be as simple as the “American Way”??

Hi Tom,
The AMA is not part of FAI hence we have our own numbers. If an AMA member flies in a FAI event, they would have to have an FAI license. All of our World Championship team members have FAI licenses.

Hi all,
Well certainly in Australia’s case, our National Body, the MAAA sits as body, as a member of the FAI (International Governing Body).
As a result, every Modeller in Australia, belonging to any club in the Nation is issued a Sporting Licence, issued by the FAI, Class F Aeromodels-Class S Space Models.
These carry our Licence Numbers. In Australia’s case, an AUS##### Number.
We have been carrying AUS numbers on our models for Decades. Yes…Decades.
Originally we used to carry VH registration numbers. The same as FULL SIZE. You can understand why this had to change.
So, I assume that the AMA is not registered with the FAI and that the US is/has been going it alone? If the AMA is part of the FAI, then why have you all not got your FAI sporting Licence? The sporting licence will have your number.

All our competitions in the US are AMA except for the world champs. I do not believe it affects us.

Dear Subcommittee Members,
I would like to inform you about a Plenary decision which has been published since 2020 and may cause some confusion.
C.11 IDENTIFICATION MARKS
C.11.1 Class F - Model Aircraft
a) Model aircraft, except for Indoor Free Flight and Scale, shall carry:
i) The national identification mark followed by the FAI Unique ID number. The letters and numbers
must be at least 25 mm high and appear at least once on each model (on the upper surface of
a wing for Free Flight models).
Note: The list of the national identification marks (3 letters per country) is downloadable from
“Documents” section of the CIAM website http://www.fai.org/ciam-documents.
Note: The mandatory carrying of the FAI ID number shall commence in 2022.
During the last years competitors could use National Licence number or FAI ID. From 2022 the unique FAI ID is mandatory. Pilots need to display Country Code and FAI ID on their planes, if they want to take part in an FAI competition.
National licence number caused a lot of confusion because there sometimes were competitors who had more than one. The FAI ID is unique. Whenever anybody had one, he will have it forever, even if the licence isn't valid.
Have a look at an example:
This is noted in the FAI database about my license valid in 2017:
<bicgblhcdfgehfie.png>
<gegnihdhmejnekgd.png>
On my former models I needed GER 384 Country Code+NAC License Number for FAI competitons.
>From 2022 GER 19233 is necessary. Country Code+FAI ID.
May be the NACs will demand to have national numbers on the model for national competitions. But everbody who normally has received an FAI License, has received it via his national federation. So in my opinion the FAI ID may be sufficient for national competitions, too. But this is on behalf of the NACs not to complicate the case. They should use the FAI card above fro printouts. On some licenses issued by some NACs important FAI ID is missing. This should be changed.
Organizers should accept only FAI ID for registration. With an excel file with only these numbers, the FAI Jury can check the validity in very easy way without entering each name into the database.
Please inform the competition pilots and the organizers in your countries to avoid problems at FAI competitions!
Kind regards
Peter
