[NSRCA-discussion] 1985 Nats

An old Futaba 9VAP that I got from my dad had a mix for variable pitch props built in. Didn't have anything for two elevator servos, but it had variable pitch!

I’m not sure the variable pitch props were ever sold to the public and I’m pretty sure it was a safety concern.  One needed to have a setup that assured you could never go to high throttle when the prop was at low pitch.  I would think that could be easily accomplished with modern RC equipment and especially with electric power.  Perhaps we will see it again but the question is, is it needed?

That's excellence and longevity extraordinaire.I absolutely loved the video. Ivan and and Chip going head to head. Relevant discussions on the nuances of particular maneuvers. Wow!. Chip if I'm correct flew at a high level for four decades including World Championships from the 80's all the way until the teens. He still to this day is a world class talent. Ivan was the Canadian champion for how many years? How many TOC's and World Championships did he fly at?Mike

MK made a spinner and propeller assembly that used an extra servo to adjust the pitch of the propellers.  A Pmix between the throttle servo and pitch servo was used to flatten the pitch at low RPM (better braking) and increase pitch at higher throttle.  As Ivan said….pricy….and added substantial weight (5 or so ounces) at a time when most F3A planes were 8 lbs +/-.

What were the variable pitch props Ivan was talking about in the video? Seems like an interesting concept.

Xavier, Nice find.  I flew in Advanced that year and was just looking through those pictures in my photo album.

Great to hear the Chip Hyde interview-  description on the elevator to preserve geometry of the avalanche is right on.

Ivan's advice on the six sided loop is still relevant today....

"Make the corners with authority, don't make maneuver too big, and the (F21- half 8 sided loop with two half rolls) becomes much easier to do..."

and Dean Pappas discussing the finer points....

"A winning airplane starts in the workshop."- Dean Pappas.

Dave Lockhart found the old EU-1 series Dean referred to... https://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/classic-rc-pattern-flying-379/10860066-rules-history-eu1-pics.html?styleid=7

Cheers,

Don
