Monte,
Thanks for your response. Do understand the challenge of putting on a major event
such as the NATS. You mentioned in your post closing registration a month before the
Event, and not having late registration, I can understand that with what has to get done.
However it is 7 weeks in this case and that does make it difficult. I did have a decent
Job but when I am told with 4 weeks notice I will be out of the country it makes it hard for me to commit 7 or 8 weeks out. I could plan time off but if business required that need to be halfway around the world time off gets Cancelled. Over a 5 year period
This happened to me many times.
I was in no way slamming what the great volunteers do I just would like to see more
People attend.

But after being involved with executing the Nats, I have found that those 4 weeks are a major scramble to finalize all the flight orders, judging assignments, programing issues for scoring, preparing and printing all the material for the pilot packets, creating contestant badges, stuffing all the packet envelopes, and executing all the other pressing matters to finalize preparations for the nats. Adding late registrants to the mix means almost starting over due to the effect it has on the computerized pilots schedules and judging assignments. All these volunteers who do all these tasks to put on the event also have jobs and families they need to attend to during that 4 weeks, so even though it seems like a lot of time to get it done, in reality, it is a monumental task especially is a team selection year.

However, it baffles me that for someone to wait until a couple of weeks before a major event that requires a week off, typically hours of travel, hundreds of dollars in expense, etc.,etc. one would wait until the last minute to sign up. Anyone that has a decent job would be expected to give the employer time to make adjustments for the employee’s absence. I would expect the family would appreciate the advance notice as well.

If you are on the fence, sign up to compete. If you cant make it then donate the entry fee. The nats is very expensive and the donation would be to a worthy cause.
