If the radii are not matched, that is a downgrade.
Longer lines will result in a lower exit, while shorter lines will result in a higher exit.
Some nice drawings are shown on RCU – look at post 5, drawing #1. Assumption is flying at 150 meters to an elevation of 60 degrees on the preceding Figure Z.

The exit of the Z happens 150’ before center. Assume the plane is going 70 mph (100 feet per second). ½ second of straight and level, and then the 4 point roll happens in 2 seconds….very fast.
Horrible sequence of maneuvers that basically forces the pilot to fly a semi rushed short Z at 175 meters and a semi rushed 4 point roll.

They DO need to be the same length. Altitude adjustment can be accomplished with adjustment of loop radius.

No they don’t. It’s a turn around maneuver that can be used for height adjustment. The power point specifically addresses this question in the downgrades.
