OK, here’s my Jason story…

Andrew and I used to prep for the nats every year in what we dubbed the “natsathon”. Starting two weeks before the Nats, I’d drive down and meet Andrew at the Weak Signals field which is about an hour south of where I live. We’d practice all day, every day critiquing and coaching as we went.

About a week before the Nats, Jason would drive up from Florida and join in and we’d take turns flying, coaching, and critiquing. 

One day, about two days before the trek to Muncie, Jason says, “hey Verne, I’m gonna sit back here and do a written critique of your next flight”. It was my last flight of the day and I was facing an hour’s drive north, with batteries to charge for the next day plus a gear box on my Hacker that needed to be greased. After I landed, Jason handed me the notes he’d taken. I took the notes and thanked him promising to go over them later that evening after my rc chores were complete.

When I got done charging and greasing for the next day, I went over Jason’s very thorough critique of my flight.

The next day, I met Jason and Andrew for another day of Nats prep. Jason asked me if I read his critique.

I said “yep, and I’m gonna keep flying anyway….”

Oh you guys.... 

There's nothing wrong with giving low scores IF you EARN it lol. Or high scores if you deserve them. I reward as well as hammer depending on the maneuvers flown in front of me, not my likes or dislikes of pilot, plane, power system, radio, or event like Nats or local contest (Worlds... not sure I'd qualify if I tried lol). I thought that's what it's supposed to be?

I'm pretty sure one of those classes isn't possible, unless I get a 30 min break for each of my own flights. And if it was the first day of the Nats, I'm game. But not the 3rd, I'd like to use that for my F & Unk practice day.

Sounds like Jason just volunteered to Judge Sportsman, Intermediate and Advanced at the Nats next year!  Good for you man.  That's setting a great example for everyone to see that the Nats is a time to come together as competitors from across the country.  What better way than to hear feedback from the top of the food chain.

Good job Jeff and Derek. Read through the whole list. I wish I had had more time to hang out at Site 1 and see all the non-2m planes in Sportsman and see my friends over there.

I did the Nats report in Model Aviation for many years and it’s a big job getting the data from all the entrants.
