I do remember one of my very first pattern contest I attended was in Ohio and Dave Brown was the only contestant to take off and land on the runway it was so windy. Even straight and level flight was impossible to perform above a 7 that day.. I was guessing at least 35mph at time as I would not have been able to fly my Full Scale trainer at that time. No tarps or E/Z ups and only hats stayed on if strapped on.. Surprisingly very few damaged planes.

This is a first: a Pattern contest cancelled because of wind! I remember flying a Super Kaos 40 at the Oasis contest back in 2004 DURING a Hurricane! What is the world coming to? LOL

  All,

I've decided to cancel the pattern contest scheduled for this weekend, 27-28 June, Eglin AFB, FL because of forecast rain and high winds. The rain is expected to clear up mid-morning on Saturday. However, after the rain stops, winds are forecast to rise, with gusts (according to Accuweather) exceeding 25 mph. The forecast wind direction is almost a pure crosswind, making landings very tricky.

I apologize for the inconvenience. Hopefully if you have a motel reservation, you will be able to get a full refund.

  Rob Campbell

  Contest Director
