[NSRCA-discussion] FAA Registration begins December 21

As AMA members, we get timely communications and educational information targeted to our interests in aeromodeling. #4) below could extend educational outreach to registered owners who are not AMA members, just another route to get the word out, wether it is a TFR or topic of interest. That could certainly be a positive aspect for the whole lot of us who own and enjoy flying RC models. While I am certainly glad that AMA is advocating for us with Uncle Sam, I am not categorically opposed to receiving helpful information from other sources that helps (there’s that word again) us ALL fly safely.

I also get that the AMA is asking us to hold off on registration, to wait while they regroup. This begs the question “do I (we) really want the AMA (or any organization) to register me (us) with the FAA as a drone owner? On the one hand, we can see this as the AMA providing a membership service, a convenience for us if they are able to connect with this registration process that is rolling out against their advice: On the other hand, if AMA is able to register you with the FAA using your AMA number, do you lose the opportunity to opt out, if you were so inclined to not go along with registration in the first place? An individual decision for each one of us, or are we just now part of the intellectual property of AARP for the general purposes of AARP? LOL

For me, today, I am 100% in favor of AMA advocating for us as aeromodelers; I am not so sure that I want any organization to register me on my behalf. What say you?

Is there any “official” information about what registration hopes to accomplish (as opposed to the “they’re coming to get us” theories)? Even if it was a page of “Know before you fly” info during the registration process, I would be more supportive. But all I can speculate on is that it is to “Hope we find that one little part that has the registration number on it”. We’ve all seen RC mid-airs and crashes, and know that often full recovery of parts is very difficult. If something bad happens, the odds seem pretty low that even if there is a number, it will be found and traced to the owner, even if there is one!
