All RC aircraft are classified as "drones". Read the faq linked by Scott at the thread start

Why does this impact us? This is only for drone usage... isn't it?

I propose the NSRCA buy all of our airplanes and get one registration number, providing copies of the NSRCA "Certifcate of Registration" to all members in good standing.
Q. If I let someone borrow my drone do I have to give them the Certificate of Registration?
A. Yes, anyone who operates your drone must have the Certificate of Aircraft Registration in their possession. You can give them a paper copy, email it to them, or they can show it electronically from the registration website.

Ah. That makes sense. Classic failure to think though the use-cases. If they just took AMA/CAA/BMFA/etc. #'s as valid registration they would solve for the same thing. If they really wanted to, they could just ask AMA to provide data regarding their active members and impose a constraint that AMA #'s can't be changed or reused.

Peter,
Actually, if you're not a US citizen, you have to do it by paper and snail mail. Only US Citizens can use the website so if you fly in the US, according to the FAA, you still must register and cannot fly unregistered here. I believe Rex pointed out why that'd be a pain.

The really funny thing here is that you have to be a US citizen to register your UAS, so if we speculate that this is some kind of Anti-Terrorist thing (which, I don't believe it to be), then they are missing a huge part of their target.
It's over reach and redundant to the AMA membership requirement of having your AMA # or name in the plane, but whatever, I'm happy to comply and really don't see the point in getting my blood pressure elevated over this. I suspect sanity will return over time as AMA and FAA continue to work together here, hopefully in a spirit of partnership rather than an adversarial relationship.

Could be interesting when having Canadians come to our pattern contests! Or from any other country for that matter! That would have to be handled through snail mail...
OR....simply give your foreign buddy a dollar for their plane....print your registration # on a piece of paper and tape it inside the plane....give them a copy of your proof of registration....you are good to go! They can buy it back when they are ready
to go home! I forget, what was the whole reason behind registration? :-)

I see no reason why CDs or clubs need to be involved. This is between the individual and the FAA. Unless AMA makes checking this be a requirement, we should not do anything. I don't recall AMA checking FCC licenses back before the FCC realized
that trying to control Citizens Band was as useless as this is.

Karl,
Good questions which need to be addressed, pattern or not. The CD's are going to have to make sure each entrant is registered or offer a way to have them register at the field.
The registration # does not replace the AMA # but must be contained in or on the model and accessible without tools. Heck, AMA clubs are going to have to make sure each person flying on a Sunday afternoon is registered. Within the NSRCA, I hope to address
this at our next board meeting to try to get y'all some answers as to how we could/should handle pattern events. They are AMA events though so hopefully we can get some answers for y'all through the S.I.G.
Vicente, I think the 400 ft AGL rule has always been in place per se.

OK, so how will this now impact our pattern competitions? Will we have to now provide proof of registration before we can fly at a contest and have our
registration # on our plane? Does this replace the AMA #?

Well, here it is boys and girls. It's official and starts next Monday. The link is for the FAQ's of what's happening.
You only have to register once and you don't have to individually register all of your models.
You must be able to provide proof of registration and have it on you when flying.
You must have your Registration # (not going to be a N number) in your airplane where it is legible and accessible without the use of tools (aka under your canopy).
If you sell a model, you should update your records. (I don't completely understand this if we aren't registering all of our models individually but, OK)
Registration is $5 but you'll get that back if you register in the first 30 days, I believe.
Have a look at the link and prepare to be upset.....
