[NSRCA-discussion] Kavan geared starter question

Peter,

That costs over a $100.00

I can get the Kavan starter parts from Sig Manufacturing. Not expensive at all. I still have 2 brand new Kavan starter at the store if I can’t fix it.

Robert,

I will try to tear it down tomorrow. I am just not sure how to disassemble it.

I’ve been using 2 of 7.2v packs over 10 years. When the batteries finally gave up, I switched to 2 of 2S LiFepacks.

I am going to try 3S Lipo after repair. I don’t think the starter will handle 4S Lipo.

The Align Lipo starter is hard to beat for convenience and sheer starting power. It could probably start my car!

The brushes and commutator ring they make contact with wear down. You may be able to replace the brushes and clean the commutator and get by with that. What I found when I used the Kavan was that an annual teardown and good cleaning and greasing the gears kept it in top performance. I ran mine on two 7.4 v ni-cad RC car batteries in series. With 14.5 volts on hand it easily turned even my OS 1.60. When it finally gave up, the commutator ring was worn down too much to use any more and I scraped it.

Ok. I switched to electric for Pattern about 5 years ago.

However, I do fly a few smaller planes with glow engines and do have engines up to YS170.

My trusty 15 years old Kavan geared starter is not strong enough to turn over a .61 size engine on compression

I do have belt driven BigCup starter for giant scale also, but don't use much.

What goes bad in these starter?

I am ordering parts from Sig manufacturing since they show all the parts for Kavan geared starter in stock.

Anyone know or remember how to disassembly this starter?

Thank you,

Ihncheol
