Something that helped me before I started Pattern was actually seeing the Sportsman sequence flown. I was a pretty good sport flyer at the time and had been flying what I thought were Pattern maneuvers but I didn't know what a 45 looked like at the end of the box, or understand about rolls being centered in lines, or about matching radii.
I'll also second the importance of emphasizing straight, level and parallel. Most of the guys I've helped get started in aerobatics don't even notice when they're way off line.

I’d come down but it looks like I’m going to be in Canada, crap.
I should finish the 5 part series next week. I still need to put together a mailing list of area clubs, probably from AMA within 100 mi. 250 mi was too many.
I also intend to suggest attending a judging seminar. There is no better place or way to get indoctrinated in how to fly pattern.

Jim,
Yes its been good discussion and I really want to hear the thoughts of others. I will be adding a page to the D8 web site today with the material I have collected and links to other items of interest. We are holding a primer at the Tr-Cities field on May. I would like to also post your 5 part pattern intro if its ok with you?

Thanks Gordon for the question. I will be watching.
The power point suggestion is a good one. I’ll print a couple and keep them in the truck.

I know what worked for us in a pattern clinic we had print off the power point for the sportsman sequence and have some one explain how its done through the power point, then after all the question are answered, have some one with experience fly the sequence so they will know what it looks like, then have all try it for themselves, maybe try one round just for fun then score them on the other rounds

Hello,
We are planning a Pattern Primer here in D8 and I was looking for any input and advice from this group. Please let me know things that have worked well in your districts and any recommendations you can provide. Also, if you have any material you are willing to share it would be appreciated, fliers, written tutorials, etc.
We are planning on holding a one day event with some guided practice and then a short Sportsman only contest maybe 3 or 4 rounds depending on how many pilots we can attract,
Thanks!
