[NSRCA-discussion] Battery Recycling...Batteries Plus

There are various threads about the salt water 'solution' on RC Groups and the dissolving of the tabs is an issue. If the tabs are gone before the voltage reaches zero there is now way to discharge the individual cells.

I basically slowly discharge the pack with a series of tail light bulbs. I leave the bulbs connected for a day or so, measure the voltage to make sure it is zero V, then twist the main leads together to make sure there is no chance or any type voltage recovery and throw them in the trash. Once fully discharged, the lipos are not environmentally harmful according to the experts.

Has anyone had issues with the electrodes being eaten away when put in salt water? As I understand, if there is a charge left in the cells, the nickel tabs will corrode away leaving the cells still charged but without a way to discharge them. Thus, it id important to fully discharge the cells to 0 volts before putting them in salt water. Haven't run into this but would like to know if anyone else has.

You are right, Jay -- drain 'em(electrically), puncture them and drop them in salt water to cnacel thechemistry. Then, just toss them...

Imay be wrong (probably am) but I didn’t think there was an issue withLiPo batteries, just NiCad. Just throw them in a bucket of salt water, then into the trash after a period of time.

Same here. I dropped off a pretty sizeable bag of spent lipos atRadio Shack and they just took them with no questions asked.

I recently acquired a new electric patternplane and it came along with some good batteries and some very tiredbatteries. I needed to dispose of the tired batteries.

I read a ton of articles on the web about thevarious home grown disposal methods...the discussion seems as broad, varied, and full of misinformation as a snap roll debate on this list...

Anyway, I googled battery recycling and foundthat Batteries Plus (http://www.batteriesplus.com/)has retail stores nationwide that accept almost any type of battery forrecycling. I called my local store and the guy said that they wouldtake lipo's for free as long as I brough them in a box....

I took in about six 5S packs with the leadscut and taped and explained that they were hobby batteries and I didnot know if they were charged or not (I know some had a partialcharge). He looked in the box and said "no problem". He took my boxand I left...

A lot easier than any method I have seen onthe web...seems like a good choice for those of us that live nearenough to civilization (aguable??) to have a retail store within areasonable distance....
