[NSRCA-discussion] Future of Pattern

As a two year newbie I'd like to say a couple things about growing pattern.

The best thing any of us can do for pattern is buy one of the many mini
(48") pattern airplanes currently available and pass the transmitter
around. It's the best way for people to understand how well pattern
airplanes fly. Next, hold a local contest for small airplanes. No rule
changes sanctions etc. just a friendly get together. The recipe is quite
simple, affordable airplanes and local (affordable distance) contests.
A pseudo pattern contest like I'm talking about could be held from one
flight station without closing the others to sport flying.

In the past couple years I convinced two everyday sport flyers to buy Great
Planes Sequences. Both have told me they will never be without a pattern
airplane in their hanger. Will they ever buy a 2M airplane and go on the
contest trail? Probably not; but most likely they will always have a soft
spot for pattern airplanes. This all happened before our very own Jim Quinn
convinced me to buy a little Osiris as a winter practice airplane.

In short, take pattern to local clubs and fly airplanes almost everybody
can afford. There is no denying 2M airplanes fly great and represent the
best in breed. In my opinion their place is for AMA sanctioned contests;
not recruiting others to join the pattern ranks.

Recruiting efforts needn't be as complex as our airplanes and
flight sequences. We need to let our hair down a bit.
