[NSRCA-discussion] Aurora review

I asked the last time this came up, and I'll ask again because it seems
clear to me, but I did not get the answer I was expecting. In my
interpretation, the statement 'Automatic control sequencing
(preprogramming) or automatic control timing devices are prohibited'
implies to me that much of the automated logic programming being done on
the Futaba 12z and 14mz (automated release of elevator in a snap due to
rudder/throttle stick positions, for example), would be illegal. Last
time I asked for clarification, I was told this is indeed permitted. It
would also seem that Section 8 below, Electronic or other signal or
feedback from the model of any kind means telemetry to the pilot during
flight is also not permitted.

Slow Friday........the rulebook (Section 4.4) specifies "Open-Loop type"
controls and uses the verbage "Control Functions Not Permitted" in the
example section where electronic feedback is addressed....the DX8
clearly does NOT close the loop on any feedback parameters and the
feedback telemetry is clearly NOT used as a control function in the
flight control system...

4.4: Equipment Functions. Radio control equipment shall be of the open
loop type (i.e. no electronic feedback from the model to the ground).
Auto pilot control utilizing inertia, light, gravity, or any other type
of terrestrial reference is prohibited. Automatic control sequencing
(preprogramming) or automatic control timing devices are prohibited.
RCA-3

Examples of control functions permitted:

1) Control rate or control movement limit devices that are manually
switched by the pilot.

2) Any type of button, dial switch, or lever control that is initiated
and terminated by the pilot.

3) Manually operated switches to couple control functions.

Examples of control functions not

permitted:

1) Snap buttons with automatic timing mode.

2) Preprogramming devices to automatically perform a series of commands.

3) Automatic leveling or stabilization in any axis (gyros, etc.).

4) Propeller pitch change with automatic timing mode.

5) Any type voice recognition system.

6) Any type of learning function involving maneuver to maneuver or
flight to flight analysis.

7) Model navigation or positioning systems (GPS, distance, or height
sensors, etc.).

8) Electronic or other signal or feedback from the model of any kind.

9) Engine management systems that coordinate power output with model
performance, position, or attitude.

By the rule book the DX8 would be clearly illegal for pattern because of
the telemetry. I doubt anyone would declare it so however.

	Jerry,

If you don't need more than 8 channels, I'd recommend the new
DX-8 -- has telemetry back to the Tx for 4 data sources. I have one.
The sticks re really silky and the 11 ms frame rate is VERY fast...
$430.00 for Tx, Rx and telemetry module...

Jon, thanks for the input. I have decided to replace my old
Stylus (1995 version) and have started checking around. Looks like 2.4
is the way to go.

	Jerry,

I just had one and sold it. Reasons:

	No stick switches

No split expo on each side of neutral. I use split expo,
especially on elevator.

Mine came with the infamous stick deadband on three axes and I
ended up sending it back twice to get it properly repaired.

	Lockouts/glitching. Found a burned/corroded antenna connection
in the receiver and sent it back for repair. Another Aurora 9 flyer
also had glitching/lockouts at our field.

Only had digital throttle trim, and it cannot be mixed or
assigned to a slider such that it only acts on low throttle.

They promise lots of feature updates via firmware, but are VERY
slow in releasing anything. And they won't say exactly what will be in
the next release. Bugs in heli and sailplane setups. Requires purchase
of a separate box to update firmware. Website in Korea that has the
updates has had frequent outages. You CANNOT download the firmware and
install it later. You MUST be hooked to the internet and download it
real time. My perception is that they are more enthralled with telemetry
(that was a year late in being released) than in getting the basic
system up to snuff. Oh, and as far as I know, they still haven't
released the 72mHz module promised last fall, if that is of any concern.

Was glad to get rid of mine.

I seem to remember someone did a vey thorough review of this
radio a short while back. Does anyone remember who, and what
Magazine-when?

	Thanks
