[NSRCA-discussion] 9CAP case finish question, now 2.4g

Spektrum did finally get smart and make a module with a built in transmitter
antenna so you don't have to deal with the wires. However I don't think it
is available yet for Futaba transmitters, only JR.

Tom,

I have gone about this three different ways.

1) Buy a native 2.4g transmitter. If you go this route, you will have
advantages. Typically you will have a lower latency if you go this route
(quicker response). With the Futaba radios, like my 10C, you can use various
FASST recievers without having to worry if they are 1024 (7ch or lower) or
2048 (8ch or higher). You only have to tell the transmitter which it is when
you program a new model. With the native 2.4g Spektrum/JR you have the
"model match" feature that you won't get if you buy a Spektrum module. And,
to my knowledge, this is the only way to get more than 8 channels
transmitted (I may be wrong)

2) Buy a Futaba module. You will be limited to 8 channels (with the TM-8
module) since this uses the PPM mode output of the transmitter. This module
has a 7/8 channel switch that you have to change if you fly different planes
with different receivers (1024 vs 2048). Very small switch, pain to change,
and probably not made to change very often. I prefer the antenna on this to
the Spektrum modules, and it is very easy to change back/forth with 72 MHz
modules. I have a TM-8 module, but hardly use it anymore. I have migrated
all my stuff over to my 10C radio.

3) Buy a Spektrum module. You are still limited to 8 channels. I don't like
the coax cable hanging out of the module going to the external antenna. The
big advantage to this is all the bind-n-fly stuff out there, and is exactly
the reason I have one.

Knowing what I know now, I would recommend you get a Spektrum module, and
buy a native 2.4g transmitter (like the 8FG or 10C). Use your 9C to fly the
bind-n-fly stuff and the new radio for everything else. But, this is JMHO,
FWIW.

Hope this helps.

Bob R.

I like the Futaba FASST stuff, but I do understand about the Bind-N-Fly.
That is really nice for the indoor stuff!

Thanks Tony,

I'm thinking I'll send it in, it's been a few years since the radio has
been in for a check up and the piece of mind is well worth it! We got
another 4 inches of snow at the house already this morning and it's
still coming down, so no better time than the present...

On a related note, what 2.4g module do you like? I don't have any 2.4g
gear at the moment so I'm not wedded to a technology yet. The Spectrum
bind and fly indoor setups are pretty compelling though...
