Heavy sailboats can't compete with lighter sailboats of the same size and
budget in most cases.
I would imagine the same would be true for pattern ships.
As long as there is competition, the money usually wins.
Since you refer to sailboats, money wins there too. Different types of sail
materials Hull materials can cost plenty of money. You have a heavy boat
and the best sails spend lots of money on technology and win races.
Light boat cheap sails lose races. The money wins races. It is rare a low
budget yacht will win.
I think this applies to the pattern community as well. after you raise the
weight limit the next thing will be to make the plane bigger. We will be
arguing that these planes need to be bigger to fly better cause they weigh so
much. It's just another can of worms.
I don't want to start a war of words here about the weight issue or any
other issue.
Play within the rules. The rule is 11 lbs. If the rule was 12 lbs we would
want 13 lbs

Look at racing sail boats if you think heavier cost more. Look at jet
fighters. The opposite is true IMO. Lighter cost more in the same size.
Aren’t you even contradicting yourself in your third sentence?

No matter what sport or hobby, Bigger ( heavier ) WILL cost more!
Keep the pattern class the same and play within the rules. Sure it will
cost more to build a lighter more powerful pattern ship. Increasing weight
limits in my opinion will NOT reduce the cost of a competitive pattern ship.
