It is interesting to note, however, that towards the end of the Snopes article they do say that some identity thieves will take the information that is on a stolen credit and record it on a hotel key.  The hotel key can then be used at ATM machines in place of the actual credit card. If they are caught with the hotel key, it is not likely to raise any suspicion.
