[NSRCA-discussion] Full Scale Airport

Ed,

As you may recall, we ran contests from the Espanola airport in the early '90's without significant problems or delays. However, the full scale traffic at that time was minimal. It was mostly local pilots, some of which were modelers as well, so we had good relations and good cooperation. Nonetheless, it adds another element of concern in running the contest. You can always get the non-local guy who decides to come and practice landings for an hour, and worse, never announces his intentions while making a straight in approach. There are some really dumb full scale pilots around. Posting a NOTAM will help, but a lot of guys never file a flight plan or check NOTAMs, especially if its just a local practice flight.

I checked the AFD for F83 and it seems there is a Unicom (122.8) - is it monitored? Since there is no fuel available there, I would guess its not. Too bad, as that would help. How do you handle the situation when you practice there?

Looking at Google Earth, I assume you fly looking west at F83. That'd be an improvement over the east facing field allowing an early start on those warm days.

Tough call, but I'd lean toward the airport if you think its manageable.

Jack

  I have been put in a difficult situation here in Lubbock and am interested in some of your valued opinions.

  Scenario:
  Our club field (now) is a small airport in Abernathy, 20 miles North of Lubbock. The city will not close the airport for model events. The club may not support a contest at the city field (not the club "home" field.)

  My question is;

  How do you feel about competing at a site, requiring you to immediately land as soon as a full scale plane is on final?

  I don't think there is much full scale traffic, but it only takes one incident/hard landing or interuption to that burner flight you have been looking for all summer, to make the contest unenjoyable.

  Thank you for your input.

  Ed
