Ron,

One method I forgot to mention is ground penetrating radar. There are
several companies that do this. Kind of expensive though. Used to find pipe
and any void in the ground. Even used to find bodies buried in the ground.

As Dave suggested around our neck of the world we do use a metal rod/piano
wire works, and poke in the ground to mark with flags where the pipe is..
When working with a 4 inch pipe it should be relatively easy to catch the
pipe. Inch and a half abit tougher.

Having worked 30+ years in the municipal water industry there is no way of
locating a PVC pipe. I have seen a system that when attached to a fire
hydrant or a faucet will induce a sonic signal into the pipe by creating a
resonating sound into the water. The theory is to pick up the sound with a
receiving device. It wasn't very accurate though. All locating equipment
relay on the ability to transmit a signal through the pipe. PVC will not
relay any signal.  Without a tracer wire the only way to find your pipe will
be to dig it. Sorry.

Oh Ya...  I want to watch that!  Ron on his knees, crawling around,
listening to the 
ground with a stethoscope!  The neighbors are gonna love that!   I hope they
take pics....
