The stethoscope isn't a bad idea. If you turn the well off, drain the pipe,
and then turn the well back on, you might hear the air and turbulent flow in
the line first.

Ron....I did the same thing once with a piece of 5/32 music wire and a pair
of vice grips.
Sharpen the end of the wire first.
It gets a bit hard to push in after the first 30" or so.
This was in clay.

The location is up in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains in
southwest Georgia. The well services a group of about twenty cabins
and the pipes were installed in about 1977. We want to install a
cutoff valve in a 4" PVC pipe about 100 yards from the well, but want
to minimize the digging to find the pipe. I can't find any record of
how the pipes were installed; no layout plan. I think the pipes were
privately installed, so no local utilities were involved.
I don't mean to impose on the Discussion List to solve the problem,
but I thought someone might be able to save me some time and energy.

Local utility companies find underground pipes by using a tracer wire that
would be installed along with the pipe, if it was privately installed they
probably didn't use a tracer wire in the install.
If the pipe is PVC the best way would be to blow a wire through the pipe and
charge it with a signal, that signal is tracable with the right equipment,
such as the local utility uses.
I understand many have used the dowsing method, but it doesn't work for
everyone.

Ron, I have seen utilities folks use a very sensitive mike. They turned the
water flow off and on and were able to hear it loudest at two points and dug
a line between. Hit it almost dead on.

Ron
In our area we have an obligation to call an 1-800 number any time we plan
to dig they will locate and identify all lines or utilities in the area and
paint lines on the ground with color codes and flags along the route of
each. If
we dig and damage any underground pipes or wires without having these people
locate them the person digging and the property owner must pay for their
repair or replacement.
Don't Dig in Texas unless u call. One company on our town damaged a main
fiber optics telephone trunk line and it cost them or their insurance
company
$1,000,000.00 to replace it and shut down phone service to the whole area.
You might try calling the local gas company and check to see if your area
has such a service. Ours will check on all land public or private.

Oh Ya... I want to watch that! Ron on his knees, crawling around,

they take pics....
But, I'm wondering.... will worms give a false reading?
