Thats true about pattern planes in the 80s. 
   
  Large gas engines can be quiet, as anyone who attended the Don Lowe Masters can attest to. Cannister mufflers or muffled tuned pipes and the right choice of prop makes a HUGE difference. IMAC is going through the same thing that pattern went through 15 years ago, the big planes are getting quieter at every meet.
