I had a dodge caravan for 10 years.  It is a great choice for a pattern flyer.  It is very comfortable and hauls a lot and gets good gas mileage.  

I would highly recommend a minivan.  To justify cost look at a 1-2 year old with warranty, maximize the warrenty and let the used car savings offset the gas costs.  Most minivans depreciate considerably.
