Yes, you are correct. That is the way it was in the mid 90s. I think Hobbico changed all that.
Back then, if you were sponsored by JR, you flew OS. If you were sponsored by Futaba, you flew YS.

It does say on the website that it was developed in "conjunction" with Futaba. That looks like a smoking gun to me.
