Steve,
Well, apples and oranges. Remember, the rules were changing as well. We had some really good planes for turnaround in the mid 90s, but the rules changed (in '96??) when the displacement limit was removed and the size limit of 2m began. So, naturally, the airplanes were evolving AGAIN. Same as when the four-stroke limit was changed and the planes AND engines started evolving.
It happened before I started flying, but I've heard the story that the Fox .78 was designed for pattern when there was no displacement limit. Someone decided there should be a limit, so it became 10cc. The market Fox had designed the engine for had just dried up. Perhaps RVP can elaborate on this.
I still think it was funny: when the size limit of 2m was imposed (there was only a weight limit before) all of a sudden there were a LOT of full 2m airplane designs, long before there were engines capable of pulling them around. The natural progression up to that point was for planes to slowly get larger as better engines (1.20 AC, 1.20 SC, 1.40, etc) came along.
Some early 2m designs had too much wing area and were difficult to stall/snap as a result. But, if there is a limit, it must mean that limit is optimal for some reason. :-)
Now power is NOT a problem, and 2m planes with fat fuselages are the norm.
What will change next??

And this was flown with Tipo's, Pheonix 8's, EU1A's, 60 size turning 13-16,000 rpm on Mk 11 X 7-7 1/2 props flying 120 + mph. as you look back no wonder many of us thought it was not right or maybe I should say planes wasn't matched to pattern, and really if you look it wasn't till maybe 2000 when the planes started really being matched to the schedule, flying at 85 mph with plenty of power.

The gentleman from Ireland lists the first FAI Turnaround schedule from 1984
and the last "pre-turnaround" FAI schedule.
In 1984 I flew both AMA Advanced and the new FAI.
I really don't see how I ever got thru it...probably Earl, Nat and Ron
remember I hardly ever did!
