Primarily because its faster and easier.  Also allows for the plane to be
brought off the runway faster in case of emergency (other plane deadstick),
things like that.  Also for glow guys gives them another chance to clear
their motor as well as get the plane exactly where they want it.  Also much
less wear and tear on the gear.  Especially for guys with retracts.

Why, in competitions, does the caller carry the plane to the line for TO and
retrieve it for landing? Why not taxi?
