Was "contest" Small Contest IdeaHmm...
"This number should be reasonably determined based upon the number of contestants and the time available"
2 days
9 pilots
say 15 min per flighe 2 flight lines
thats 8 flights an hr
6 hrs flyingSat and 4 hrs sunday 80 flights.. os call it 81 and each can fly 9 rounds.
Or we can be reasonable and go for the normal target of 5 rounds.. and have contest complete in one day.
Nothing says that a CD has to allow someone who DID NOT show up for the first day (or even after the first round is complete) to be allowed to enter late...
Letter of the rules was met by clipping the conest to 1 day.

Del,
You and Terry continue to state that a "rule" has been broken and have gone so far as to insinuate that there are possible dire consequences that could be levied by the AMA. I have searched and cannot find any such reference in the rule book or in any documentation I have ever received as a CD. Could you or Terry please enlighten the rest of us where this may be found.
The rule book does state that the CD should announce at the beginning of the contest the number of rounds to be flown. When those EXACT number of rounds have been flown, the contest is complete. Section 9 of the Rules state:
9. Number of flights. At the beginning of a contest, before any flying is done, the CD shall announce the number of flights that will be flown. This number should be reasonably determined based upon the number of contestants and the time available. Once this number has been announced, this is the exact number of flights that should be flown. The winners in each class will be the contestants who are ahead when this number of flights is finished. Fewer flights may be flown if weather conditions cause some loss of flying time during the contest. Contest officials shall make every reasonable effort to ensure that all contestants receive equal opportunity to fly.
I look forward to the appropriate reference because as a CD I certainly wouldn't want to be punished by the AMA, heaven forbid!!

Hi Ken
Don't know "who" your arrow is meant for Ken, but rules are rules for ALL to follow... all the time... I am just making others that maybe aren't aware or others may even think it is ok to break the rules. If we stop following the rules, or only pick and choose which rules on a given day we decide to follow how is that help the growth of pattern. People that are new or 1st time entering may have read the rules come to expect that the organization does follow the rules. I for one, hate to see some, start to condone that the rules are their to use when they see fit.

Mark,
I remember Arch telling me about that contest, and it sounded like you guys all had a great time. I just can't imagine anyone complaining that "you didn't follow the advertised agenda, so I'm calling the AMA".
Not speaking of anyone in particular...ok, maybe I am...

Reading this thread reminded me of a contest that Arch Stafford had a few years back where we had a total of 9 or 10 people show up 3 of which were local sportsman pilots. We had a full spread too, with 1 or 2 in each class. It didn't make much sense to hold a traditional contest but we were all there to have some pattern "fun". Soooooo... We made it a 2 class contest. The sportsman pilots each flew 2 rounds at a time (One takeoff and landing), with lots of feedback (the entire group judged each flight) and they had a very competitive well judged event.
The rest of us ALL flew the advanced pattern, with Handicaps. FAI got -1pt per maneuver, Masters -1/2pt, Advanced flew it straight up, and Intermediate pilots got +1pts.
It was not only a lot of fun (Everyone but the advanced guys were flying an unknown for the most part) but it also was a VERY tight contest. I don't recall who won...didn't really matter.
No..it didn't follow the advertised sanctioned contest, but it was great fun, competitive, a very good learning/practicing event, and it made the best from the turnout we had.
