I have a junk plane that I use to test equipment before I install it in anything important. It is large enough that I can fly it at very high altitude, and collapse the antenna on the Tx to see what kind of range I get IN THE AIR.

I've personally had no problem with steel pull-pull cables, however, I've also been careful to keep the antenna away from the pull-pull cables by several inches.
Do you understand what occurred with your last incident? I've heard of people losing their replacement plane because they didn't realize they had either a bad TX or bad RX and they used them in the replacement plane. Therefore, if I were you I'd focus on making 100% SURE that none of the components used before (that you plan to use again, including TX) are faulty.
I'm not quite this hard core, but Earl Haury once told me that when he has a crash he takes the RX home and introduces it to his hammer. This would certainly prevent any problems with the RX (either causing the crash or caused by the crash) from downing any future planes.
