[NSRCA-discussion] Are we behind the times?

At the Huntsville Team Selections in '81 there was a large numbered wheel on a tripod behind each judge, as the judge assigned a maneuver score a pointer was rotated to a number on the wheel by helpers for spectators to view. Of course this was pre-turn around - so there was plenty of time to accomplish the task. Seemed popular with the flyers, didn't seem to bother the judges. A "real time" display of the aggregate score for each maneuver (protects individual judge "sensitivity") would likely improve spectator appeal - with the rapid fire scoring needed with TA, it's not clear just how to accomplish this. The spectator input would probably work both ways - boos for incorrectly scored maneuvers, both high and low. Bet you'd see flyers wearing earphones (with the volume of something cranked up)!

There is a thread on RCU under the "Classic Pattern Flying" forum about the team selection in 1972. Way back then they were posting real time scores of pilots as they flew - apparently they had a "reporter" that looked over the judges shoulders as they scored each maneuver and then radioed them to someone that posted/wrote the scores of each maneuver as they were flown onto a poster size scoresheet attached to a board.

With the technology available to us today I would love to see this at future contests - can you just imagine all the "oohhhss and aahhhs" from the spectators. :)
