I am glad I am getting some feedback.. It reminds me of Ron Van Putte's
"downwind turn" efforts several years ago when he was the aerobatics
columnist for Model Aviation magazine.... When his mail was low, he would
throw in something that would get everyone's attention, then he had a lot to
write about!
Works every time!

Tony,
I understand what you are saying, but where does it stop? Do we
declare that the only National Champ is the one that wins the top
class? Then we are back to the pattern masters contests of the olden
days. We already have qualifiers within Masters and FAI to get to the
finals competition, all within the scope of the current Nats
arrangement.
I support the way it is done now. Let anyone who wants to compete at
the Nats, compete. In days of old, we had hundreds of contestants
without qualifiers, and were able to successfully conduct the Nats.
Just when we seem to getting renewed interest in pattern, I see
qualifiers as a way to kill interest. And District 3 may have 10 top
pilots in a class, but another district may only have one or two; do we
let each district send the same number? Is that fair?
We should be doing what it takes to increase numbers both locally and
at the Nats. I believe local qualifiers is a bad idea.

Scott:
We are talking about a National Championship event. Has nothing to do
with not promoting the sport. The guys that qualify for a particular
NASCAR race does not seem to effect the interest of spectators or
would-be racers
That event is growing even though the dont let just
anyone drive in them!

Hmmm, reduce the number at the NATS, I thought the whole idea was to
promote the hobby and fellowship of pattern flying. We keep complaining
about the lack of people at the local level and the retention of new
people or pricing the average person out of the hobby. So now limit
the amount at the NATS why not just shoot ourselves in the foot some
more. Some like myself work weekends cannot make allot of local events
and I do travel up to 11hrs to my old home club in upstate NY each year
for a contest, but enjoy the practice and going to the NATS to see old
friends, and meet new people.
