[NSRCA-discussion] cleaning up an engine ?

Not really. Acetone and mineral spirits work for moderate amounts of
varnish, but not if it's really baked on and thick. Alternatives to Demon
Clean are the aluminum friendly aircraft paint stripper as Ron mentioned.
One of my flying buddies uses gasket remover from the auto parts store. This
comes in an aerosol can. It's used to remove baked on gaskets. Just make
sure you get some that's safe for use with aluminum. The antifreeze in a
crock pot supposedly works very well too, although I've never tried it. The
key to any of these methods is finding something that's safe to use on
aluminum. You don't want to remove the varnish and end up corroding the
motor case. That's what can happen.
