Thanks Dave…. I’d heard about the fuel that smelled like shoe polish and came in glass jars….!  Man, I really do enjoy the history of modeling…. remembering one of the first books I picked up as a kid of 6 was a copy of Bill Winters (Model Aircraft Handbook) which I believe was dated 1944….I gave .25 for it and still have it. 

 

In 1976 I worked for my friend Bill Knost, (House of Hobbies Tulsa, ….  Bill used to fly CL speed, Goodyear, and made the circuit flying class II with Flat Top Stormers and the like. Back in those days he built about an airplane a week in order to keep one flying:-))  anyway, in the shop the stories just went on an on from guys about the old days…love it man..love it.  If I had a nickel for every time I heard the guys talk about flying CL with the Atwood engines

 

So Mark Atwood…Small world….. some 28 years later I fly with you (you cd’d Comair contest 2004 and I guess about every year:-)) I guess your dad is Don Atwood the engine designer…..????

I just knew all you Atwood guys would speak up!!  Hehehheh…..

Chris, I think the Cox TD .049’s had more suds than the Shriek but the Cox’s were about 10 years later according to Bill Atwood’s bio.

Leroy Cox hired Atwood to design the TD series so that’s probably why they are/were so good.

The Shriek seemed to run best on Cox red can or O&R Gold Seal fuel with a Kay Sun 5.2 x 4 plastic prop. There was some guy around here making a fuel called “This is It”. It was brown and smelled like shoe polish and came in a (shudder) glass jar. If you spilled a little on your finger, 2 days later you grew a 3rd eyeball!!

I haven’t tried a Norvell but they look nice. Really, I prefer the radial mount like the Atwood series of engines because they are lighter, smaller and easier to mount. This isn’t a problem with profile style models but the square fuse models like the Snapper would have to be widened slightly in the firewall area.

My experience with Atwoods was with C/L not R/C….this was so long ago that R/C was really free flight sometimes interrupted by radio.

	Reminds me of the first time I used Monokote. I was attempting to cover a Goldberg Li'l Jumpin Bean. My Mom's iron was almost as big as the plane!!!
	
	
	
	IIRC, the instructions said to set the iron for "permanent press". :-)
	
	
	
	Back then (1969??) the Monokote instructions actually showed a regular iron.
